The end of a successful summer, our next blog starts on 23rd October when we have a fly-drive.
Sightseeing day and a head towards the golden circle, and a beautiful sunny day to look around the Vik and southern area.
Then geysir and the golden circle before heading to the caldera for our final camp.
The day started extremely wet, it rained heavily in the night and was still raining when we took the tents down.
Plan was to go to Jokulsarlon as we had seen that the weather was not going to be good anywhere so chose to do something that we could see even if the cloud was low and it was raining.
This was the start of the day, one of our vehicles had got a wet fob and would not start, then it was stuck in gear, so we got them to a hotel and there a mechanic came and advised, not fixable within the time scale so they were getting taken to Reykjavik then they could limp to the docks on Thursday – very sad to loose them for a couple of days but at least they were safe and sorted.
The rain subsided when we got to Skaftafell
but returned when we arrived at Jokulsarlon, lots of icebergs but also lots of young seals playing.
with svinafell on the way back before the party in the lava cave.
Traversing through the interior to Hveravellir from Laugafell to another hot pool. The weather is turning and rain is forecast across the whole of Iceland from tomorrow.
Lazy day around Akureyri – new people having flown in arriving and a couple leaving as they were only with us for 5 days.
Heading up the valley to Laugafell and the hot pool via the christmas shop.
Today is a mixture of sand driving and lava fields with views of glaciers, campsite ready for the sand flats tomorrow but also it allows for yet another night where the northern light prediction is good and no light pollution.
John caught a fish before we set off:
Northern lights put in yet another brief appearance.
